Mamelodi Sundowns came from behind to secure a 2-1 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Loftus Versveld on Saturday afternoon.
The game got off to a lively tempo, with both sides seeing a lot of the ball, although chances were hard to come by for both clubs.
Steve Komphela’s charges started seeing a bit more of the ball after the 15-minute mark, with George Maluleka and Siphiwe Tshabalala stamping their influence on the encounter.
Sundowns, meanwhile, looked lively down the flanks with Anthony Laffor, Keagan Dolly and Percy Tau troubling the Chiefs full-backs.
Chiefs eventually broke the deadlock after 39 minutes when Rama Mphahlele’s cross-cum-shot managed to sail into the far corner.
However, Sundowns were level two minutes later, as Dolly played in Tebogo Langeman, who fired a low effort into the far corner, 1-1.
Sundowns then took the lead after 52 minutes when Sibusiso Vilakazi side-footed home from close range, after Tau’s effort was cleared off the line.
With Chiefs looking for a way back into the clash, Komphela introduced Keagan Buchanan for Tshabalala after 62 minutes.
Sundowns made their first change just before 70 minutes as Lucky Mohomi replaced Tiyani Mabunda
The Brazilians nearly added a third goal in the 78th minute, but Itumeleng Khune produced a superb one-hand save to keep out Laffor’s header.
Chiefs pushed for an equaliser in the closing stages of the second half and even moved Erick Mathoho into the attack. However, they could not carve out a clear-cut opening as Sundowns held on for the win.
