Sundowns Earn Textbook Win At Polokwane | PSL

Mamelodi Sundowns earned their first Absa Premiership win of the season by beating Polokwane City 2-0 on Wednesday.

The Brazilians made a promising start to the clash as Sibusiso Vilakazi attacked down the left channel, but his cross was well blocked as he looked to pick out a teammate.

Percy Tau then surged down the same flank after a mistake from Seabi, which saw the ball gifted to Sundowns, but nothing came of it.

In the 12th minute Pitso Mosimane’s charges were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty. Tau was fouled by Thapelo Tshilo in the box, causing the ‘Downs man to go to ground. However, the referee waved play on.

Sundowns continued to keep the pressure on their hosts as they peppered the left side of the pitch with attacking play from the likes of Tebogo Langerman.

Disaster almost struck for Polokwane five minutes before the break when Semenya attempted to clear but hit teammate Mbonani instead. The ball rebounded and went just wide of City’s near post.

The second half was off to a great start for Sundowns as they took the lead after knocking on the door throughout. Morena sprinted down the right wing and provided a pin-point cross for Tau to volley home first-time.

Polokwane never really looked like getting back into the game and conceded a second goal in the 81st minute. Tau turned provider as he marauded towards the byline before cutting it back for Khama Billiat to finish with composure.

Here’s how they lined up:

Polokwane: 1 Chigova, 2 Semenya, 24 Hlongwane, 4 Tshilo, 22 Mbonani, 21 Seabi, 14 Manaka, 17 Ramagalela, 27 Mncwango, 10 Tlolane, Maluleke.
