Bafana Fall To Angola In CHAN Qualifier

Bafana Bafana suffered a 2-0 defeat to Angola in the first leg of their 2016 CHAN qualifier at the Rand Stadium.

It was the visitors who had the first opening of the game in the 13th minute when Miguel Quiame forced Wayne Sandilands into a fine save with an effort from distance.

Bafana enjoyed most of the possession in the opening exchanges, although they failed to create anything in the final third.

Angola squandered a glorious chance in the 26th minute when Ary Papel scooped his effort over the crossbar from six-yards out with the goal at his mercy.

The home side registered their first effort on target in the 32nd minute when Michael Morton forced Hipolito Damiao into a low save with a stinging effort from 20-yards out.

Despite Bafana edging the possession statistics in the first half, it was the visitors who created the better openings, although they failed to convert.

Stand-in coach, Thabo Senong, made two attacking changes at the start of the second half, as he introduced Lyle Lakay and Pecy Tau.

Siyanda Zwane came to Bafana’s rescue shortly after the halftime break, as the defender pulled off fine clearance off the line.

It was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 54th minute via deflected effort from Mateus de Costa, which gave Sandilands no chance.

Bafana nearly hit back in the 64th minute when Lakay’s low effort had been saved, before Morton placed the rebound wide of the mark from 12-yards out.

Another Bafana substitute, Bradley Grobler, went close in the 75th minute when his snapshot from the edge of the area sailed just wide of the upright.

Bafana went even closer in the 83rd minute when Luvuyo Mamela rattled the upright with a fine glancing header from six-yards out.

However, Angola sealed the win in stoppage time when Manuel Afonso broke through middle, before lobbing the on-rushing Sandilands.

Here’s how they lined up:

Bafana Bafana: Sandilands, Letlabika (c), Zwane, Mokgothu, September, Mbunjana, Qalinge, Memela, Morton, Ndulula, Nyundu

Angola: Mario, Isaac, Silva, Mafuta, Gomito, Afonso, Estevao, Gerson, Ribeiro, Da Rocha, M. Afonso
