Tuks, Chiefs share spoils

A first half goal from Bernard Parker was cancelled out by Tebogo Monyai as Kaizer Chiefs and the University of Pretoria played to a 1-1 draw in their Absa Premiership match at the FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Wednesday night.

Tuks had the first shot on goal in the fifth minute when Atusaye Nyondo tried his luck from long range, but his effort sailed over the target.

Chiefs took control of the match after that with Parker turning the creative wheels in midfield and manufacturing a great scoring chance for Reneilwe Letsholonyane in the eighth minute, but the latter shot wide from 12 yards out.

In the 12th minute Letsholonyane created an opportunity for Camaldine Abraw with an inch-perfect pass that saw him free just inside the box, but the striker fired into the side netting.

Eight minutes later Siphiwe Tshabalala fired a thunderous 30-yard shot just over the crossbar.

In the 26th minute a mistake in the Tuks defence allowed Tshabalala to break into the right side of the box and he squared for Parker who showed good control on the turn to finish with aplomb from six-yards out.

Tuks tried to hit back right away with Vuyisile Ntombayithethi firing a long-range shot centimetres wide of the Amakhosi goal in the 28th minutes.

Ten minutes later Getaneh Kebede also found some space 30 yards out and he too took a crack on goal which skimmed the wrong side of the Amakhosi crossbar.

Abraw nearly doubled Chiefs’ lead two minutes before the break when he met a teasing cross from George Lebese, but the striker headed wide from 12 yards out.

The second half saw Chiefs lose control of the match as Tuks began to dictate the midfield battle.

At first the University team struggled to break down the Amakhosi defence, but the away team persisted and found the equaliser in the 71st minute.

Chiefs failed to clear a corner-kick effectively which ended in Monyai firing a 16-yard shot into the bottom corner of the net.

The Amakhosi came close to finding their second goal in the 80th minute when a corner-kick was cleared to Letsholonyane on the edge of the box, but he volleyed just over the target.

Neither side could find the winner as the game ended 1-1.
