SuperSport United held on for a 1-0 win in the Absa Premiership match against Orlando Pirates at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Wednesday afternoon.
After the original Tuesday night game was abandoned at 1-0 to SuperSport due to floodlight failure at Peter Mokaba Stadium, the match resumed at 12h00 today.
Michael Boxall’s 22nd-minute goal on Tuesday evening when he turned in David Mathebula’s free-kick proved enough to win the game as Pirates failed to come back into the match in the remaining 27 minutes on Wednesday afternoon.
Mathebula went off injured shortly before the break on Tuesday night, while Pirates had to change Brighton Mhlongo and Thabo Rakhale in the 62nd minute after both picked up injures.
There was not much action thereafter. Bucs registered a shot on target in the 65th minute when Issa Sarr’s long-range header was comfortably held by Ronwen Williams.
Pirates did all the attacking, with SuperSport happy to sit back and attack on the counter as they looked to preserve their lead.
Kermit Erasmus had a chance to equalise in the 74th minute with a powerful shot after bursting into the box, but it was straight at Williams.
In the 79th minute Pirates come close again as Erasmus’ chip was cleared as far as Sifiso Myeni, whose shot was deflected before Michael Morton came up with a brave block just a minute later to keep out Oupa Manyisa’s piledriver.
Four minutes from time there was a rare SuperSport chance as Jeremy Brockie looped a header to Ovono, who made no mistake.
A minute later Matsatsantsa debutant Denwin Farmer made a great last-ditch challenge to stop Sarr from a clean run on goal.
Bucs kept pushing hard towards the end as Myeni’s free-kick from just outside the box sailed narrowly over before an unmarked Happy Jele hit a free-kick straight at Williams.
In the second minute of stoppage time Pirates came so close after great play from Menzi Masuku, who found Erasmus in the area. However, the striker’s shot sailed across the face of goal.
There were still two more chances for Bucs in the 93rd minute but Williams saved the day for SuperSport, producing an amazing double save to deny Erasmus and then Masuku.
