efu Mashamaite hit pause on protracted negotiations over a new contract at Kaizer Chiefs to scoop the Premier Soccer League’s flagship award – the footballer of the season – at the Sandton Convention Centre last night.

The Amakhosi defender and skipper not only added the defender of the season accolade to his prizes at the ceremony, but was also recognised by his peers, who voted him players’ player of the season.

Mashamaite, who played every minute of every game on Chiefs’ way to winning a league and cup double this campaign, is yet to agree terms with the club over a new deal.

He joined the side from Bidvest Wits in July 2011. He played a key role and contributed some match-winning goals for the Glamour Boys and only received two yellow cards the entire season.

In total, the defender cashed in R450000, adding that to the potential win bonus from Chiefs for being crowned champions with three games to spare.

Mashamaite beat stiff competition from his rearguard partner at Amakhosi in Mulomowandau Mathoho and Polokwane City hard-midfielder Cole Alexander.

Mathoho and Alexander also came second best in the defender and midfielder of the season category respectively. Mashamaite pipped his teammate to the gong once again.

Teko Modise claimed the Absa Premiership midfielder of the season accolade, adding that to his Nedbank Cup player of the tournament award.

The Sundowns talisman helped the Brazilians to a cup triumph in Port Elizabeth on Saturday.
