Schalke make Real Madrid sweat
Schalke came within a whisker of beating Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals after a 4-3 win at the Santiago Bernabau on Tuesday night.
With Real leading 2-0 from the first leg in Germany, the Spanish club progressed 5-4 on aggregate after a pulsating match produced seven goals.
Christian Fuchs got the ball rolling for Schalke in the 20th minute but Cristiano Ronaldo equalised just five minutes later.
It was almost like somebody pushed repeat when Klaas Jan Huntelaar made it 1-2, only for Ronaldo to pop up again with a header at the far post to make it 2-2 just before half-time.
Karim Benzema put Real ahead on the night in the 53rd minute after rounding two defenders and the goalkeeper before slotting home make it 3-2.
But just two minutes later it was 3-3 as Leroy Sane equalised for the German club with a beautiful left-footed curler from the edge of the box.
Huntelaar produced a smashing finish off the underside of the crossbar with just six minutes remaining to set up a tense finale, but Carlo Ancelotti’s side managed to hold on.
In the night’s other match, FC Porto thumped Basel 4-0 to progress 5-1 on aggregate. The goals were scored by Yacine Brahimi, Hector Herrera, Casemiro and Vincent Aboubakar.
