BELGIUM – Bafana Bafana defender Anele Ngcongca was involved in a drunken brawl with Genk teammate Tornike Okriashvili on Saturday night, according to reports in Belgium.
Ngcongca, expected to be named in the national squad on Friday for the 2015 African Nations Cup qualifiers against Sudan and Nigeria, was left with a “swollen nose” after the incident that allegedly happened in his own home.
Genk have made a dismal start to the new season with no wins in their four games and following Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Kortrijk the players took to a bar, according to the Belgian-based Sport /Voetbalmagazine.
That was serene, but once a few players returned to Ngcongca’s apartment, it seems things got out of hand and he ended up trading blows with Georgian Okriashvili.
Nowhere does it suggest Ngcongca himself was drinking, but Okriashvili was later that evening arrested by police for drunk-driving.
It is an incident that will stun the club and could lead to serious repercussions, not just for Okriashvili, but potentially Ngcongca as well.
The South African recently signed a new four- year contract with Genk to keep him at the club until June 2018. He has already been there seven seasons and is the club’s all-time appearance record holder in the Belgian league.
