After months of speculation regarding his future,SAFA have today told Bafana Bafana head coach,Gordon Igesund, that his contract will not be renewed.
This was confirmed by Safa President, Danny Jordaan, at a press conference today.
“We will not renew Gordon Igesund’s contract.
We will look for a replacement coach,” Jordaan told the conference.
“The process for finding a new coach will start immediately after this press conference,” added Jordaan.
There has been a lot said about Igesund’s reign with Bafana, with some extremely positive results coming out of his spell in charge, however doubt was cast upon his abilities after he failed on some of the mandates given to him at the start of his time with national team.
Having seemingly turned around South Africa’s fortunes in the qualifiers for the World Cup in Brazil, Bafana slipped up against Ethiopia, and had their dreams of playing in consecutive World Cup finals dashed.
The final straw for Igesund was when Bafana Bafana failed to win the 2014 Chan tournament which South Africa hosted.
Former Bafana boss and Portuguese mentor,Carlos Queiroz, has been mentioned as the favourite to replace Igesund, according to Siya crew sources, however no deal has been finalised yet.
Nigeria’s mentor, Stephen Keshi, has also been thrown into the mix as a possible candidate, with sources within SAFA having confirmed that the FA have spoken to the former Nigerian international.
